In the beginning
Today starts the beginning of my blog, but not the beginning of my writing. I have been working on this novel for over a year and could never get past the first three chapters. I started off with my story and a vague idea on how it would go. I had my characters and what their motivations were, I thought I was set. I wrote and wrote and then I drew a blank. Maybe it was because I’m a bit of a perfectionist and any critiques I received, I had to go and re-write. Therefore, my chapter one has seen many forms.
I thought I was a fly by your pants writer, but turns out I need to be organized. I tried many outline techniques from many different people and none of them worked. I kept coming back to Randy Ingermanson’s Snowflake Method. http://www.advancedfictionwriting.com/art/snowflake.php It looked like something I could use, so this year I bought it. I’m not saying this method is for everyone, but it really helped me to organize everything into one program. It helped me to write a long synopsis and because of that, I now have the confidence to write my story. I knew where it was going and when and how it was going to end.
If you are a new writer and looking for help with outlining, I recommend checking it out. It might not work for you, but it did for me.
